Build Your Own Tree Stand

Tree stands have become one of the most effective and popular tools for hunters during the “season”. Using a tree stand will really increase your chances of a big catch. If you build your own tree stand it is a great way to save money, but you do need to ensure that it is well built and safe. After you have decided to build your own tree stand, there are some things you should take into account; these will help you figure out exactly what you need.

Basically there are three different types of tree stands: the climbing stand, the ladder stand and the hanging stand. The climbing stand has two parts, the platform and the seat. This type of tree stand is useful only on trees without limbs up to the height you want to be positioned. The benefit of this type of tree stand is that it is portable.

Ladder stands have a ladder, of course, and a seat and platform connected to the tree. Ladder stands offer good stability and safety, but are generally not portable. Hanging stands may look similar to ladder stands, with one difference: they use cables or chains to connect to the tree. To get up to the tree stand hunters use ladders connected to the tree, or steps that are screwed into the tree. Again, hanging stands are not portable. Ladder and hanging stands allow hunters to attach their stands to trees that have branches at lower heights.

If you have decided that you are going to build your own tree stand, there are plenty of plans available on the net. The most important thing to take into account is your safety. When you build your own tree stand ensure that it is sturdy and before you use it each time, check it again. When exposed to the elements materials can deteriorate quickly: check for wear, rust, metal fatigue, cracks, loose or missing nuts or bolts and rot. Check straps or chains and replace them if you need to and tighten loose nuts and bolts and replace rusty or worn materials.

When choosing the tree you are going to build your tree stands on select one that is in healthy condition. No trees with rotten or dead limbs, loose bark or leaning trees, in cold climates don’t use trees with smooth bark. Each year replace your steps and never reuse old peg holes.
